Same reason they look up when someone says 'Hot chick, 12 o'clock', because they're idiots. Incidentally, I love the words i have to type in to prove I actually exist, so far i've had 'wachichi' and 'myainma'. x
1) because the speakers are up there... 2) habit (looking towards the direction of noise when speaking to someone/listening) 3) perhaps not really looking up. People could simply stop looking at their phone/ipod/book they look ahead (instead of down) to break concentration of whatever they were preoccupied with...
